One fin on the ventral surface of the fish. This is usually always positioned after the vent at the rear of the fish just before the Caudal fin.

The caudal peduncle is marked with a black band, this black band encircling the caudal peduncle from dorsal to ventral surface. The adipose fin, supported by a small fin spine, sometimes contains black pigmentation.

Checkerboard Cichlids have an off-white ventral surface. That same color, along with dark beige, is included in the side striping.

Most catfish have a cylindrical body with a flatted ventral surface allowing for benthic (bottom) feeding; and for this they are negatively buoyant - a heavy bony head and reduced gas bladder means they will sink rather than float.

Counter-illumination: Having bioluminescent organs that are concentrated on the ventral surface so as to increase the effect of countershading (see also countershading).
