VHO Very High Output Aquarium Lighting
Very High Output bulbs allow you to fit fewer bulbs over your tank and provide considerably more lumens as compared to NO bulbs. All VHO bulbs are 1.5" in diameter (T12).

VHO (Very High Output) Lighting: Very High Output fluorescent bulbs have a much higher output than NO bulbs. They require a special ballast and end caps. VHO lighting is used mostly on freshwater plant tanks or marine reef tanks.

VHO Lighting: Very High Output fluorescent lighting. These lights are powered by special ballast which deliver a wide spectra light.

VHO Lights: Very High Output (VHO) lights are specially designed fluorescent lights that give off a much higher intensity light than regular fluorescent bulbs.

VHO - Very High Output Fluorescent lighting.
Velvet Disease - Fish disease caused by the protozoan parasite (Piscinoodinium). Also called Gold Dust.

VHO lighting is the older of the two fluorescent technologies. This has its good points as well as it down sides. VHO is comparable in size to the stand flouresent strip lights one would see in a warehouse.

VHO and HO bulbs cannot be used with a standard fluorescent ballast.
These systems fall into the medium price range and will vary depending on whether the system includes a magnetic or electronic ballast.

There are also High Output and Very High Output types of lamps that have a discharge current of 0.8 A and 1.5 A instead of the standard 0.3 A.

Bulb arrangements are mounted in a canopy that fits over the top of the tank. Common styles are oak, pine or mica. Mica canopies are available in an almost endless variety of colors.

Very High Output (VHO) Flourescent Light
VHO flourescent lights typically range from 75-160 watts and have Kelvin ratings from 10,000° to 20,000°. These lights are very expensive and produce a lot of heat.

From research I have done, it has been noted that NO and VHO fluorescent lighting do not penetrate as far as and with the same intensity of equal wattage of compact fluorescent and metal halide lighting.

VHO Lighting: Very high output (VHO) fluorescents pack much more lighting power. A standard 4-foot VHO bulb is 110 watts. Special fixtures and ballasts are needed to run these lamps. They work well on tanks up to about 18 inches deep.

Compact fluorescent lighting-are basically very bright, and smaller fluorescent bulbs than their relative HO, or VHO fluorescent bulbs. This special type of fluorescent lighting has unique phosphors that illuminate intensely when electrified.

o T12 High Output variants: The HO and VHO T12 lamp use recessed double contact to prevent interchange and operate by increasing the current (T12 NO = 430 mA, HO = 800 mA, VHO = 1500 mA) ...

Basically, in fluorescents, the VHO lamps give a higher operating cost but a lower replacement cost for the same total amount of light. But it's close, and you should plug in your own numbers to see what's best for you.

T5s are a smaller in diameter version to the VHO. Their smaller size makes them easer to design efficient reflectors for them, and their small size allows more lamps to be run over an aquarium.

As I mentioned before; if you only have fish VHO full spectrum fluorescent lights or power compact lights will be fine.

Fluorescent lamps come in different types the normal output (NO) or the very high output (VHO) are the most common. The VHO bulbs produce much more light than the NO bulbs but require a special ballast to ignite them.

If you select a custom fluorescent hood, then you will have to choose between normal output (NO), high output (HO) and very high output (VHO). Most people with fish-only tanks stay with NO lamps.
