Girardinichthys viviparous is a goodeid that comes from the canals and lakes on the high plateau of central Mexico in the Mexican states of Mexico (and perhaps Hidalgo, see later comment).

The eggs of ovoviviparous fish are fertilized within the female and are retained by the female through hatching and development and she then gives birth to well formed juveniles, also known as "aplacentral viviparity.

Ovoviviparous fish are ones in which the eggs develop inside the mother's body after internal fertilization but receive little or no nutrition from the mother, depending instead on the yolk. Each embryo develops in its own egg.

(2) In viviparous species, the young develop without egg inside of the mother's body. The young are nourished by secretions of the female or through an umbilical-like cord.

They are viviparous fish, because the females give birth to living fry. The male`s anal fin, transformed into a gonopodium (reproduction organ).

On the other hand, more than 500 species of fish are viviparous (livebearers) practising internal fertilisation and producing fully formed young, which are immediately able to swim and feed.

The majority of species are either true live-bearing species [viviparous] or have internal fertilization with the eggs hatching before being laid so that the female produces live young [ovoviviparous].

Some of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish, including guppies, mollies, swordtails and platies, deliver fully formed young, as opposed to the vast majority of fishes, which lay eggs. Scientifically, these fish are said to be viviparous, ...

These are called viviparous fishes. The sea perches of the Pacific coast, for example, give birth to living young of considerable size, sometimes one-fifth the size of the mother. Several kind of sharks produce living young.

Of all known species of fish only about 1% of all fish are viviparous, or livebearing. Yet despite their relatively low numbers, the livebearing species have been a staple in the aquarium industry since it's beginning.

One of a few livebearing marine fish which are kept in captivity. China Rockfish store sperm and self-impregnate (viviparous). This species is not sexually mature until 10 years old at a minimum.

Most fish kept by aquarists are oviparous (egg-layers), but there are some exceptions - viviparous fish (or livebearers).
