Since municipal water supplies are treated with chlorine and/or chloramine, these substances must be neutralized before the water is added to an aquarium.
We learned in school that water, or H2O, is composed of hydrogen and oxygen molecules. Neutral water is given a pH value of 7.0. It contains equal amounts of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-).
Note: A floating fern, Water Sprite can quickly cover the surface with new growth. This plant has many feathery roots that make excellent hiding for fry. Some varieties can be planted in the substrate.

There are many different types of test kits on the market today. Many of these are effective, inexpensive, and offer a broad choice of tests.
