Water Column - The water in the aquarium from the top of the substrate to the surface of the water.

· Water column = the vertical part of a water body
· Z
· Zygote = Gk "zygos" meaning "pair". The product of the union of an ovum and a sperm. It is the very first "cell" of the new organism.

The water column will tend to keep the gravel at water temperature through conductive heating; heat will "seep" downward.

Since a water column rapidly attenuates red light, many, if not most, corals found on natural reefs are exposed to only a fraction of red light energy found at the water's surface.

The "water column" is just a two-bit term for the visible water in the tank, i.e., the water between the substrate and the water surface level. This is not the entire water volume of the system.

Water hardness tolerance: 10 - 12 °dKH
Tank type: freshwater tank
Floor water column: entire water column
Behavior: aggressive toward their own kind
Care level: moderately difficult
Feeding: omnivore - ...

Reducing their concentrations in the water column will also starve algae. Regarding the effect of P, there was an interesting article published in TAG which is an English translation of one originally published in AquaPlanta (see TAG, V7n1).

These products are used to precipitate particles in the water column to leave the water crystal clear. Most often they should be seen as a quick fix of the symptoms, not as a cure for the problem.

Many fish have evolved to occupy a very specific portion of the water column, on the other hand some will go to where the food is.

they are there to eat any waste food and keep the tank clean, plus they will happily eat the waste of other larger animals thus removing it from the water column and minimizing waste a real boon in keeping manual maintenance to a minimum and ...

As the food was floating down, they would jump into the mid water column and do loop-de-loops to catch it. For the first while, these two fish were very social with eachother and could be seen playing and resting together.

In nature it feeds on insects at all levels in the water column. Being nocturnal, it will actively swim throughout the aquarium after dark and readily eat sinking foods (tablets, pellets) and surface flakes.

Bettas prefer to eat from the upper parts of the water column. They don't really enjoy eating from the bottom of the tank. So before dropping the food in your betta's tank, make sure you have his attention.

Typically, the worms will shed either eggs or sperm into the water column, and after a short perioda juvenile worm will settle and attach itself to the substrate.

Some of these loose fragments of film or individual bacteria may be in the water column temporarily. But they cannot metabolize there. If they cannot attach to a vacant surface soon they will die.

They reproduce sexually by releasing gametes into the water column. The gametes appear as the cloudy white substance you observed. This relatively common occurrence is frequently sparked by changes in lighting or water conditions.

This fish typically hangs in the water column, waiting for plankton to drift by for it to capture. Feed this fish finely chopped meat foods such as shrimp, Mysis shrimp or frozen prepared carnivore diets.

problems in aquaria with poorly managed nitrogen cycles, a situation accentuated by the "eartheater" habit of constantly sifting the substrate in search of food, and in the process liberating waste materials from the substrate into the water column.

Most fish can be placed into one of three general categories based on the level of the water column they tend to occupy: top-water, mid-water, and bottom dwellers.

Mechanical filtration is the physical process of removing larger particulate matter from the water column. Common mechanical filtration sources may include: filter floss, foam inserts, and diatomaceous earth.

As they move, organic materials suspended in the water column adhere to the surfaces of the bubbles. At the top of the tube, the bubbles come together to form a foam.

Because water flows upward through the filter, the sand in the filter becomes suspended or "fluidized" in the water column, forming a fluidized bed of sand.

45 microns which are found in the water column. The maximum size of suspended solids is dependant on their specific gravity and the velocity and turbulence of the water.

CO2 diffusion Reactor: There are many ways you can diffuse the CO2 gas into your water column.

This is an algae that floats in the water column. If you do not take care of it your tank will soon be green water.

Description: Though a bottom dwelling species, come dusk, they will traverse all strata of the water column--for such a non aerodynamic (or aquadynamic, if you will) body structure, they are surprisingly strong swimmers.

Eggs are released into water columns and externally fertilized. The eggs float in the water columns for around 30 days before morphing into plankton and spending another 40 days floating in the column.

P. nyererei is an insect eater and lives in intermediate water column, territorial males live in rocky aeras, young males and females live in the upper water column.

A small bit of APR or OSI Brand Micro Invertebrate Food suspended in the water column will encourage / stimulate foraging.

They breed in the open water column (in the center of the aquarium). Males in the aquarium will constantly display to vie for the females' attention. Females will mouth-brood the young for up to a month.

They are surface feeders and prefer to take food in the upper parts of the water column. Aquarists recommend live foods and meaty prepared foods.

After spawning, remove the parent fish and lower the water column to 3.93" (10CM).

Hydrocotyle leucocephala does better with a nutrient rich water column and loves nitrogen. If nutrients are low, growth seems to stall and leaves become smaller. Aquarists with a bit harder water might find that this plant grows very fast.

In addition to its vibrant body color, the active and peaceful Yellow Clown Goby is often seen perched on live rock or coral right out in the open or hovering in the water column in plain view for hobbyists to enjoy.

Also after maintainance, when the filter is turned back on, loosened filter scum from the sides of the propeller and tunneling is flushed out into the water column. If the power is not switched off, firstly it is not a safe practice to handle it.

Free Spawners
This term means that females drop their eggs into the seawater, and fertilization/development occur in the water column or on the tank floor.

Newly hatched eggs or born fish.

1 in water column in about an hour. A slow change does not stimulate spawning.

Venturi skimmers use a venturi valve to inject bubbles into the water column. Both air-driven and venturi have co-current and counter-current designs, with counter-current protein skimmers being far superior to co-current models.

If your submersible heater has an internal thermostat, it is usually more efficient if you position it horizontally in the tank, and fairly low in the water column.

A varied currant also brings the coral new water in which it can absorb more nutrients, note that xenia doesn't actually have 'mouth' organs so it is speculated that it absorbs its nutrition directly from the water column.

It may not be practical to attempt to control larger parasites with ultraviolet radiation, and parasites that multiply without spending significant time in the water column will obviously be unaffected.
