Water Conditioner / Dechlorinator
If you live in a city than you most likely have chlorine or even chloramine. If your unsure of the what is in your local water, phone the city to find out.

Water Conditioners
Although I do not use many water conditioners I always have Amquel and Novaqua in my fishroom. Designed to work together, these two will neutralize ammonia, chloramine, chlorine and heavy metals.

I have used and thrown away several PH adjusters, including Discuss Buffer. I now use RO water to lower my PH from the tap. The only conditioner I now use is Prime. It is highly recommended by others and it seems to do the job.

Many Water Conditioners will neutralize many toxic chemicals. Usually you can change up to 20% of the water in your aquarium without adding Water Conditioner. But changing more than 20% of the water in one day is risky, even if you add conditioner.

Be sure to get a water conditioner that removes chlorine AND chloramines, and use it in all water you add to tank. My choice for a newbie tank would be a 29 gal, with whisper 2, strip light and glass cover, two small heaters.

Another issue with water changes is failure to add some sort of water conditioner. Local water companies add some combination of chlorine or chloramines to our water. This is great for us, it keeps are water parasite and bacteria free.

In an effort to save people money, do not buy products that advocate being a general water conditioner or a bacteria supplement. If you have cycled your tank then you are already an expert at growing bacteria and do not need help from a bottle.

when i started the tank i dropped some chemicals which was suppose to cycle the tank but then i realized it was only meant for a 20 gal tank. oh well I also use the novaaqua plus water conditioner. Is there any thing I'm missing or should be doing?
