The Weather Loach we are describing here, Misgurnus anquillicaudatusis, is one of three species commonly referred to as a weather loach. The other two are Misgurnus fossilis and Cobitis taenia.

Weather loaches are on the list. Do I need a licence?
Probably not. Although the list mentions the Weather loach, Misgurnus fossilis, this is not the fish in the UK aquatic trade. The Weather loaches imported
into our shops are actually M.

Weather Loaches - Misgurnus fossilis and Spotted Weather Loaches - Cobitis taenia should be avoided. They are cold water species and have the unfortunate habit of jumping out of aquaria, especially at the approach of a storm.

I dont believe Weather loaches become sexually mature until at least 2 years of age. Mine began spawning at about 2 years old and 5-6 inches of size. They are now 8 and 9 inches each and still growing.

We've had a few set-backs, particularly the Weather Loach which was purchased with the pet store assurance that "loaches eat algae". Weather Loaches certainly eat algae... but they do it several levels up on the food chain.

SC: Weather Loach ( Misgurnus species), White Cloud, other cold water species.
FOOD: Flake; pellet; tablet; vegetables; plant matter; live; insects, crustaceans, insect larvae.
SEX: Males are slimmer and the rear of the anal fin is concave.

Some (such as the weather loach) come from colder waters throughout Europe and so do better in tanks that are kept below 24C, whereas those loaches (such as the Pangio and Botia species) come from tropical Asia, ...
