Western Mosquitofish are undemanding and hardy. Males are usually up to an inch smaller than females. A small, planted tank is required and these fish can stand a wide range of water values.

This species is distinguished from the Western Mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, by its speckled patterning and faint vertical band through the eye (the Western Mosquitofish will bear no markings).
