Long Fin White Clouds are omnivores and should be fed a diet of flake foods with plenty of vegetable matter, as well as freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex.

The latin name Tanichthys albonubes derives from the name of the Chinese Boy Scout (Tan) who discovered the species and albonubes meaning "white cloud", after the White Cloud Mountains where the fish was first found.

White Clouds are very hardy fish that are capable of much colder temperatures. They can be used in place of a Betta if Bettas bore you. Two White Clouds can be kept in one 5 gallon aquarium, be warned though, bigger is always better.

The White Cloud Mountain Minnow originates from the gorges of the White Cloud Mountains of China. Golden and long-finned varieties have been developed.

White Clouds make an attractive display in a small tank with dark background and some fine plants, and often even multiply (they are egglayers with little appetite for their own eggs or young) in such a setup.

We need to caution here, that we have had good luck with all of the species listed above. However, some hobbyists may have difficulty with some of the listed Rasboras.

Goldfish and white clouds are kept in the beautiful little pond.

Size:
The White Cloud Mountain Minnow grows up to 2 inches long while some Fathead male minnows can be 3 inches.
Life Span:
The White Cloud Mountain Minnow live between 5-7 years. The Fathead Minnows have a lesser lifespan.

Examples are tetras, corys, angels, clown loaches, white clouds, barbs. Some kinds of fish do well in trios - 1 male, two females, so they don't harass the females to death. Examples are gouramis, bettas, guppies, platies, mollies.

Cyprinids (White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Zebra Danios, Rasboras, and Cherry Barbs) These little guys are hardy. You will find tons of color and pattern variations. You will also enjoy watching their schooling behavior.

The eggs were small, about the same size as those of White Cloud Mountain Minnows, and were very transparent and ahesive. They were all laid on broad leaved plants, near the middle or the top of the leaves.

This fish is a surprisingly aggressive little fin nipper, it should only be housed with fast swimming and robust fish, fish like Zebra Danios, White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Rosy Reds should be able to tough it out with them.

A Word of Caution ...

These include White Cloud Mountain Minnows, the several commonly available species of Danios and Rasboras, and most available species of Barbs. For those with a slightly larger tank, Rainbowfish make a great schooling fish. Corydoras ...

You may have danios, guppies, white cloud minnows, swordtails or barbs. Your fish are not wild-caught and should never be released in the wild. Most of the fish we use have a one to two-year life span and will not get any larger than 1-4" long.

Etymology: Tan-ichthys= named after the Chinese boyscout Tan, who discovered the fish in 1932, ichthys means fish. albonubes= white cloud, after the place of origin, the White cloud mountains.
Synonyms: Thanichthys albonubes.

A few fish ignore their eggs or fry, and so can be bred in a species tank. White cloud minnows can breed this way, and many killifish will at least ignore the eggs. Baby killies are fair game, though. Guppies will also often ignore babies.

Coldwater fish include the White Cloud Mountain Minnow and goldfish varieties such as the Comet and Fantail.

Together they get along well with 2 boseman rainbows, 1 austrailian rainbow, 2 roseline barbs (my fav's), and 7 golden white clouds.

Try to imagine the scenery: the ship is lying under a crisp blue sky lined with a few white clouds in a calm bay with crystal clear water … lots of floating icebergs, every now and then a lone seal or whale moves around.
