Origin: Mexico, Rio San leonel, Rio Tamazula, Rio Grande de Santiago, and other locations in central America. Here the fish occur in mountainstreams but also in polluted canals.

The water sprite did not fare particularly well initially with the mbuna because they seemed to like the taste of it but I eventually added some of the red-tailed goodeid, Xenotoca eiseni, ...
