Species Information
Native to Central America: endemic to Mexico from southern Tamaulipas to northern Veracruz.

Xiphophorus variatus
These species are some of the best for beginning hobbyists, and are also the best for a beginning breeder. They are very hardy, are available everywhere and come in a wide variety of multi-colored hybrids.

SYN : Platypoecilus maculatus dorsalis , P. variatus , P. variegatus
PD : An elongated fish with a fan-shaped caudal fin. The back is slightly arched, and the belly is full.

Imagine a tank with 5 Xiphophorus variatus, 5 Corydoras sterbai and an LDA016 brown ancistrus. And then one day you see a small cyst on the front glass measuring a mere 2 mm with something resembling eggs inside.

"Green Swords'' (which are really multi-colored) are naturally colored X. helleri, but unfortunately wild morphs of Platies are not often seen. The Variegated Platy - Xiphophorus variatus is sometimes seen, however, and fills this role nicely.
