Zebra Plecos are very shy fish and rarely come out during the day time to feed unlike the common pleco which rarely hide and feeds all day.

The zebra pleco, Hypancistrus zebra, gets its name from its black and white stripes, resembling the colouration of a zebra.

SYN: Peckoltia zebra
PD: Similar in body shape to Peckoltia species. The body is bright white in color with an overlaying, unique pattern of black stripes. This pattern continues through the fins.

Zebra Plecos - if the internet has adopted a catfish, then it is this fish. So much is written online about this enigmatic catfish that it is hard to assimilate accurately.

Tanks for Zebra Pleco's need to be set up quite differently from cichlid tanks. Their natural habitat is the fast flowing Rio Xingu in Brazil, and generally consists of small piles of rocks with sandy substrate in between.

Care: Keep the zebra pleco in larger tanks, with peacefull coinhabitants. Despite it's appearance the fish do not eat algae(see feeding). Caves and hiding places constructed from stones or driftwood are recommended.

I prefer this type of pleco over any of my others, I have an albino bristle nose, mango pleco, marble pleco, albino chocolate pleco, zebra pleco (the leopard is almost at a tie with this one), royal pleco, and a gold nugget pleco.

There are excellent egg and fry development pictures in the January, 1996 TFH magazine article, "New Information on the Zebra Pleco". Do not, however, pay too close attention to the captioned day counts.

I have 2 Gold Gouramis in a tank with 2 Angelfish and a Zebra Pleco and they all do just fine together. Both of my Gouramis came from the same tank and are about 3-4 inches long and were very healthy when we bought them and they still are.
