Armature
- the term is generally used to describe the skeleton of a building, but properly used refers to hidden structural ironwork used as reinforcement for thin columns, supports for canopies etc.

Armatures : Iron framework used within mason-less Rose Windows to support the glass weight.
Ball flower : An ornamented ball sculpture surmounted in the petals of a flower.

term applied to the upright iron bars in windows which pass through the eyes of the saddle bars or horizontal irons to steady the lead lights. The French call the latter traverses, the stanchions inontants, and the whole arrangement armature.

Immense windows, rising from near the pavement to the arches of the vaults, occupy the entire area between the vaulting shafts, thus transforming the whole chapel into a sturdy stone armature for the radiant stained-glass windows.

Flat roofs are achieved by building light mud walls on top of the ribs between the centre and the outer wall, making the ribs into giant armatures or brackets with a curved inner profile.
