Base molding

Architecture Base cruckBaseboard

Base Molding - The decorative wooden strip along the top edge of the baseboard.
Base Shoe - The wooden strip (usually quarter round) along the bottom face of the baseboard at the floor level.

 


There are parts to a Tuscan base: the Plinth Block, the Torus, (also known as the bull nose or base molding), and the Cincture. Directly above the stylobate, or the platform on which the architectural column bases sit, is the Plinth.

Open-bed or broken-bed pediment: pediment with a gap in the base molding.
Pediment: Open-topped or Broken-apex: A pediment where the sloping sides are returned before reaching the apex.

Block of wood that rests against floor or base molding used to support a column or molding.
Plinth:
The base of a chest or other furniture that rests on the floor, opposed to sitting on legs.

from kicks and abrasion and sometimes prevents furniture from being pushed right against the wall. As a tertiary function, it can serve as a decorative molding, also called skirting board, skirting, mopboard, floor molding, as well as base molding.
