Burh: A fortified Anglo-Saxon town which was usually surrounded by a ditch an earthen ramparts topped by a palisade.

Burgh (borough, bourg, burh)
- a Burgus is literally a fortified enclosure. Burgh and town are not synonymous, there is a legal difference, relating to rights of trade, burghs were in effect commercial centres administered by burgesses.
