cap: the topmost order of the pedestal in a classical order.
caisson: see coffer.
capital: the uppermost part of a column, usually carved with abstract or figural ornament.

Ply Cap A plain shaped molding, 1/4 rounded to provide a smooth edge along the baseboard.
Pocket door A door which slides open into cavities within walls, seeming to disappear when open.

Drip cap: Horizontal exterior molding to divert water from the top casing so water drips beyond the outside of the frame.
Extension jamb: A board used to increase the depth of the jambs of a window frame to fit a wall of any given thickness.

Priest cap: A fortification; so named because of its similarity to the shape of priest's cap, also known as a 'swallow tail'.

A chimney cap is placed on top of the chimney to keep birds and squirrels from nesting in the chimney. They often feature a rain guard to keep rain from going down the chimney.

Note the projecting stone course at the top of the chimney that forms a cap, and the projecting course just above the roof junction. The latter would have been to deflect rain from the roof joint, much like modern flashing.

A square-shaped cupola or tower may cap these two, three, or four-story homes.
