The Cape Cod is one of America 's oldest and most enduring styles for family homes. English colonists who came to the United States in the 1700s began building tight little homes that could withstand fierce weather.

Cape Cod houses were a very popular house style for young families, especially after World War II.

Cape Cod -A style of house originating in New England in the 17th century. It is traditionally characterized by a low, broad frame building, generally a story and a half high, with a steep, pitched roof with end gables.

The 1-1/2 story style of a cape cod home is often found in plans categorized as Country style or farmhouse style homes. Since these homes are in a more rural setting large covered porches are often times added.

The story-and-a-half Cape Cod designs were adapted from early houses of New England. Georgian and Federal designed doorways were most often included. Attic bedrooms are tucked underneath the steeply pitched roof.

Many wood-sided buiildings painted blue with white trim are immediately referred to as "Cape Cod" style.
