CENOTAPH A monument erected in honour of a dead person or persons whose remains lie elsewhere. Here in Britain, often represented by a memorial monument to the fallen of the two World Wars.
Directly below the centre of the dome is the cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal and next to it that of her husband Shah Jahan. The actual tombs, however, are in a vault or cave directly beneath the cenotaphs.
The absence of bones has led archaeologists to identify the monument as a cenotaph, or memorial. Scholars have long pointed to the parallels between this find and the following descriptions of funerary practices in the Old English poem Beowulf.
