CHIMNEY-PIECE A mantelpiece, usually of wood or marble, that surrounds the sides and top of a fireplace opening. CHIMNEY-STACK An upright structure in stone or brick, containing flues and rising above the roof.
The overmantel is derived from the carved panelling formerly applied to chimney-pieces of importance, but the word is now generally restricted to a movable fitment, often consisting of a series of shelves and niches for the reception of ornaments.
Mantelpiece - The wood, brick, stone or marble frame surrounding a fireplace, frequently including an over-mantel or mirror above; sometimes called chimney-piece.
