Clasping: Encasing the angle. Clerestory: An upper story of a building with windows above adjacent roofs.

 


CLASPING BUTTRESS: a buttress which entirely encloses the corner of a building. COFFERED PANEL: a sunk panel, as used particularly in carpentry (cf. FIELDED). COFFERING: an arrangement of sunken panels decorating a vault or arch soffit.

Clasping - encasing the angle.
Cloister - four-sided enclosure with a covered walk along each side connecting a church with the principal administrative and domestic buildings.
Clunch - hard chalky material.

Clasping buttress: one which encases the angle. Diagonal buttress: set diagonally to the angle. A flying buttress transmits the thrust to a heavy abutment by means of an arch or half-arch.

Different types can exist at corners, for example, angled, diagonal, or clasping. A flying buttress transmits the thrust of a wall by means of a half arch, downwards into a pier.

The junction, of an octagonal spire and a square tower involved a distinct architectural problem. A thirteenth century technical innovation in England, broaches are the triangular shapes clasping the spire above the top corners of the tower.
