Common Brick - A brick used where strength in construction is required rather than a pleasing appearance.

Common brick - poorer quality brick used where structure and appearance is not important.
Compass bricks - bricks which taper in thickness and/or width.
Diaper brickwork - a diamond pattern, achieved by using bricks of different colours.

A facing brick with minor defects or blemishes which is therefore downgraded to a backing or common brick
Wasting - Removing excess stone roughly with a waster before dressing a block as dimension stone and/or;
