Conductor head

LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR, or Lightning Rod (Franklin), the name usually given to apparatus designed to protect buildings or ships from the destructive effects of lightning (Fr. paratonnerre, Ger. Blitzableiter).

If I hear the conductor calling 'all aboard' as I enter the depot, my heart first stops, then palpitates, and my legs respond to the air-waves falling on my tympanum by quickening their movements.

Flat roofs have roof conductors. Ridges or high points have a sharp tip to emit ions and neutralize the high static voltages which cause lightning strikes. Both lead any discharge that does occur to the down conductors.

Insulation - A non-conductor used to separate conducting bodies to prevent transfer of electricity, heat or sound.
J
Jamb - An upright piece forming the side of an opening, as a door or fireplace.

Podia can also be used to raise people, for instance the conductor of an orchestra stands on a podium as do many public speakers.
