Counterguard - A long, near-triangular freestanding fortification within the moat. Counterscarp - Outer slope of ditch. Course - Level layer of stones or bricks.
Counterguard: An outwork, triangular in shape, open at the rear, situated before the face of a bastion, ravelin or redan, used to protect these works from enemy cannon fire.
