Crucks construction - A category of medieval architecture, of obscure origin, which culminated in such great roofs as those of Westminster Hall.

 


Base crucks have blades rising from ground level to a tie-beam or collar-beam which supports the roof timbers. Full crucks have blades rising from ground level to the apex of the roof, serving as the main members of a roof truss.

- form of roof construction in which the roof is carried on pairs of naturally curved timbers (crucks) joined at the ridge and combining the functions of upright post and rafter (full crucks) or embedded into the wallhead (upper crucks).
