The New American house plan is all about uninterrupted flow: from kitchen to dining area to family room; from family room to deck; from master bedroom suite with walk-in closets to luxurious master baths with double sinks, separate shower and tub.

Like the public building above, this house really looks like an ocean liner, from the port hole window to the "upper deck". Horizontal lines of the building are emphasized by the banding.

- in bridges, a recess for pedestrians projecting from the carriageway or deck, usually placed over the cutwaters.

Sole Plate The bottom horizontal member in a frame wall. Usually either single or double 2' x 4's. It is nailed to the deck or rough floor and the studs are nailed into it.

Rafter
A roof beam sloping from the ridge to the wall. Is one of a series of sloped structural members, designed to support the roof deck and its associated loads.

Windows are of equal size and placement. Most Octagons have a verandah or porch encircling the house. About half have an octagonal cupola, belvedere, or roof deck. Cupolas were built to provide all rooms with light and ventilation.
