dosseret, or impost block
Cubical block of stone above the capitals in a Byzantine church, used to carry the arches and vault, the springing of which had a superficial area greatly in excess of the column which carried them.

 


dosseret: block above a capital, as used in Byzantine and Romanesque architecture to help carry the voussoirs of the above arcade.
double pile: a house two rooms thick in plan.

being taken from Byzantine churches. The illustration of the capital in S. Vitale, Ravenna (figs. g and io) shows above it the dosseret required to carry the arch, the springing of which was much wider than the abacus of the capital.
