It is placed in the most prominent place in the church, usually at the east end, in the choir or sanctuary, facing the main entrance to the church.

East Wall The wall behind the altar, as viewed from the nave, is the 'east wall,' no matter what direction you are actually facing. In the past, all church buildings faced east, and it is still the case for eastern Orthodox churches today.

The town of Lamu probably contains the best examples of eighteenth-century domestic architecture on the coast: the typical Swahili house of the period consists of a stone enclosure wall with no outward-facing windows.

However, if an altar is present in an apse then a more precise definition would be "altar apse", or "east facing apse", or "sanctuary".

The Dutch Colonial variety featured a steeply pitched front-facing gambrel roof with nearly a full second story. A gambrel roof creates a profile that resembles a portion of a bell, being one or both of the lower roof slopes flare at the eaves.

Choir stalls The benches in the chancel where the choristers are seated. Here, instead of facing east as the pews do in the nave, the choir stalls face north or south so that the choristers look across to each other.

The most elaborate Greek Revival style buildings resemble temples with their roof gables facing forward with monumental columned porticos across the front. Churches and courthouses have ornamented belfries or cupolas.

Space limited by two adjacent weight-bearing structures (columns, pilasters etc.). In churches the bay is also an area of the nave defined by four adjacent columns or pilasters in facing pairs. Here, the bay generally has a cross vault ( * vault).

Speaking of orientation, churches are nearly always oriented so that the main altar is at the east end of the church, facing Jerusalem and, not coincidentally, the rising sun.
