A fire escape consists of a number of horizontal platforms (usually steel gratings), one at each story of a building, with ladders or stairs connecting them.
External fire escape stairs must be constructed with dead bearings and without cantilever work. They must comply with the requirements for enclosed staircases as regards width, going, width of treads, height of risers, doors, handrails, &c.
