Forebuilding: (1) A subsidiary tower projecting in front of a castles main entrance. See barbican, gatehouse, small keep. (2) A small tower which covered the first floor entrance of a keep. See small keep.

Forebuilding: A projection in front of a keep or donjon, containing and guarding the stairs to the main entrance. Fortress church: A church built so that it might be used for defensive purposes. Footings: Bottom part of wall. Fosse: Ditch.
