What is a hipped roof?
A hipped (or hip) roof slopes down to the eaves on all four sides. Hipped roofs are often found on French Inspired and American Foursquare style homes.

Hipped roof - A roof with slopes on all four sides. The "hips" are the lines formed when the slopes meet at the corners.

Hipped roof: a roof which slopes in four directions. Often resembles a pyramid in shape.
Hood: a small roof projecting from a wall above a window or door.

The low, hipped roof further increases vertical proportions by being barely visible so that the walls will not appear to be shorter than what they are. In the center of the roof would be a tower or a cupola.

Hipped Roof: A roof which slopes upward from all four sides of a building, requiring a hip rafter at each corner.

Jenkins-head Roof - A gabled roof with its apex truncated by a small hipped roof.
Joist - Wood framing members, usually set 16" apart on center, carefully chosen to support all "live" and "dead" loads.
