Inner Curtain - The high wall the surrounds the inner ward.

 


Hornwork: (1) An outwork consisting of two long curtains extending from the main works and was fronted by two demibastions connected by a short curtain, forming an outer bailey, it was smaller than a crownwork but serving the same purpose.

Barbican - also called a hornwork. A structure built to protect the outside of an entrance. Can also be, as at Ludlow and Exeter, a special kind of towered gatehouse built in two parts. The gateway or outworks defending the drawbridge.

Hornwork: Freestanding quadrilateral fortification in front of the main wall. Horseshoe Arch: An arch shaped like a horseshoe. It is found particularly in Spain or in buildings influenced by Spanish ones.
