A possible source is Islamic architecture. Islamic architecture influenced the architecture of sourthern Italy. The pointed arch apparently was used in the now lost church of St. Benedict at Montecassino, the mother church of the Benedictine order.

The west door of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France is a fine example of Early Gothic architecture (begun 1160). The period saw the introduction of Islamic influence in Christian church architecture, such as the ogival (pointed) arch.
