These massive timbers hinted at an important industrial survivor (Illustration), in a city with a remarkable collection of industrial buildings which, since the early 1800's, have been blessed with fire-proof jack arch constructions.

Around the fanlight is an impressive arch made from cut-stone voussoirs and over the windows are the usual jack arches.

flat arch - An arch having a horizontal intrados with voussoirs radiating from a center below, often built with a slight camber to allow for setting. Also know as a "jack arch".
