Landing, a platform forming a kind of halting-place between two flights of stairs. A quarter-space landing forms a space, usually a rectangle, equal in width and length to the breadth of the two flights which it separates.

Holland Landing
This is a beautiful Neo-Classical doorway on a basically Georgian brick building. It was built for the lawyer Henrey Blackstone in 1851.

Masonry or wood band along a wall or around a column or chimney.

balcony - For stairs with an open concept upper floor or landing, the upper floor is functionally a balcony. For a straight flight of stairs, the balcony may be long enough to require multiple newels to support the length of railing.

Balustrade - A protective guard rail to prevent people falling, at the edge of a stair, landing or a platform, with closely spaced infill such as balusters from the handrail down to the floor, and/or

NEWEL POST - a post at the foot of a straight stairway or one at a landing .
RISER - the vertical part of a step between the treads.
TREAD - the upper horizontal part of a step.

Two flights of stairs parallel to each other with a half-landing in between.
Dormer
A structure projecting from a sloping roof, usually containing a window.

Mezzanine A floor between the ground and first floors, often accessed off a half landing.
Mortar Mixture of sand, cement (or lime), and water used to join stones, blocks or bricks, and for pointing and general filling.

Finial - Ornamental timber section added to the highest point of barge boards or hanging from stair newels on landings.

newel cap and post - the end post of a balustrade, the cap is on the top of the newel; an ornamented post at the top, bottom, or landing of a stairway that supports the handrail. (p. 16, p. 20, p. 22, p. 24, p. 28, p 32 p. 34, ).

NEWEL A vertical support at the center of a circular staircase. Also, a post that supports a handrail at the bottom or at the landing of a staircase.
NICHE A shallow recess in a wall designed to contain a statue or some other ornament.

In modified form (typically, without the semicircular sash) it is also seen in Greek Revival and later styles. A typical location for a Palladian window is above the entry door, where it lights a central upstairs hall or stair landing.
