A carved Gothic ornamental panel treatment made to resemble folded linen, probably originally after the folded napkin on the chalice in the Catholic ritual.
Linenfold - Panelling ornamented with a conventional representation of a piece of linen laid in vertical folds. One such piece fills one panel. Lintel - A horizontal beam or stone bridging an opening. Listel - See Fillet.

LINENFOLD PANELLING: wooden panelling in which each panel is given a conventional representation of a piece of linen laid over it. LINTEL: a flat slab of stone across the top of a doorway.
The panel itself can be flat or fielded ie with the greater part of it projecting beyond the framing. Sometimes the surface of a panel can be decorated as in "linenfold" where, as the name suggests, the decoration is based on folded linen.
