Loculus

A loculus (pl. Loculi) in architecture is a recess large enough to receive a human corpse. Usually found in either a catacomb, hypogeum, mausoleum or other place of entombment. Loculus can also refer to an alternative name for a sarcophagus.

Loculus: a place for the deposit of valuables, especially a chamber in the podium of a temple, accessible from the exterior; the Temple of Castor and Pollux was ringed with loculi.
