Medallion. Small bas-relief, often made of metal.
Monochrome. Used to describe a figurative image executed in a single colour, or shades of a single colour.

Medallions were a very fashionable form of ornament during the Renaissance; the most famous medallion maker was Luca Della Robbia in Florence. These are plaques, usually round, bearing figures or family symbols in relief.

The bronze medallion awarded to the Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate is based on designs by Chicago architect Louis Sullivan.

The entrance to the chancel is marked by a Triumphal Arch showing medallions with the Apostles and Gervase and Prothase. Christ appears at the apex or keystone of the arch.

It is noticeable that the designs are restricted to the interior of the courtyards and are not visible from the outside, consisting of arabesque medallions and chain motifs executed in thick but precise white lines.

The medallions that form the illustrations in the Bibles moralisées (Moralized Bibles) of the second quarter of the century frankly emulate the designs of stained glass.

On the center of the architrave was a repoussé medallion of Christ. On either side of Him were medallions of angels, the Prophets, the Apostles, and finally the Virgin Mary. The carvings on the architrave were deeply tied to the liturgy.
