PARTY WALL, a building term which, in England, apart from special statutory definitions, may be used in four different legal senses (Watson v. Gray, 1880, 14 Ch. D. 192).

 


Party wall - A wall shared between two properties, such as is the case with semi-detached houses.

Party Wall The wall which separates, but is shared by, adjoining properties.
Pediment A low pitched gable.
Pier A vertical column of brickwork or other material, used to strengthen the wall or to support a weight.

PARTY WALL - Each owner owns half with rights in respect of the other half.
PEBBLE DASH - Cement mortar render with brown pebble or similar pebble finish.
PEGTILES - Old handmade tiles held by wooden pegs on battens.

The basic house plan - freestanding or in a row joined by party walls - is a rectangle, typically set short side to the street. The corner unit in a row may be larger and have a side ell.

rowhouse One of a group of an unbroken line of attached houses that share common side walls, known as party walls.
rubble stone Irregularly shaped, rough-textured stone laid in an irregular manner.

Exterior - Outer, outward, external.
External Wall - An outer wall of a building not being party wall even through adjoining to a wall of another building and also means a wall abutting on an interior open space of any building.
