PENDENTIVE, the term given in architecture to the bridging across the angles of a square hall, so as to obtain a circular base for a dome or drain.

 


Pendentive
When a square space is vaulted to provide a circular space for a dome the resulting curved triangular supports are called pendentives. This is most common in Byzantine architecture.

Pendentive
A concave, triangular piece of masonry placed at the corners of a square bay and used to make a structural and visual transition from the square bay to the circular base of a covering drum or dome.

Whilst certainly muqarnas did have a decorative function, from the beginning its early and frequent association with domes and pendentives suggests that the form had structural associations.

The solution was to articulate the transition between the square plan of the building and the circular plan of the dome by means of pendentives, or concave triangles, the arrangement of which can be visualized by drawing a circle within a square.

Sail domeA square dome or vault of one continuous curve with the same diameter as the diagonal of the square, so that it rises from pendentives between arches. So named from its supposed resemblance to a billowing sail.

In the most typical examples the dome or cupola rests on four pendentives.
