Pylon is the Greek term for a monumental gateway of an Egyptian temple. It consists of two tapering towers, each surmounted by a cornice, joined by a less elevated section which enclosed the entrance between them.

Tetrapylon - Also known as a quadrifronic arch. An arch monument at a major street intersection which has two vaults so people may pass through in all directions, as at the ruined arch at Lepcis Magna.

Among the earliest examples are those found in Egypt, generally built in the thickness of the walls, as in the pylons and temples; a remarkable example was found by Dr Arthur Evans in Cnossus, in Crete, consisting of a staircase in stone, 6 ft.
