Roof Pitch - Degree of roof slant stated in inches rise per foot.
Roof Run - The horizontal distance from the outside of a bearing wall plate to the center of the ridge rafter.

 


Roof Pitch - The degree of a roof's slope.
Rotary Cut: Veneer produced by centering the log in a lathe a turning it against a broad cutting knife which is set into the log at a slight angle.

Roof Pitch
Relates to the slope and inclination angle of a roof in building construction. A roof is considered pitched with a gradient greater than 15 degrees (slope greater than 3.215 in 12). Carpenters frame rafters to "pitch" a roof.

âE¢ Steep roof pitches at varying heights. Curved roof pitches are sometimes incorporated in one or two locations. âE¢ These homes are usually two stories in height with high rooflines. âE¢ Chimneys are usually large and sloped at the base.

Bell Cast
- a levelling out of a roof pitch over a wall head which achieves a bell like shape. Usually achieved by fixing short timbers called sprockets or cocking pieces to the feet of the rafters. Can be very graceful.

The type of bungalow common in Buffalo is quite different than what was built throughout the rest of the country ñ wood construction instead of brick; a steeper roof pitch; and two stories where one was usually the norm.

The overall size and shape of the building, however, is not. The roof pitch is low, there is no bell tower, and no other gothic detailing, not even drip moulds. Because of this it is called Regency Gothic.

In most cases there were many identical dormers that were arranged symmetrically across the front of the roof pitch.
