In the 1957 Second Edition of Webster's New International Unabridged Dictionary, there is only one pronunciation given, the equivalent of: SALE tere; rhymes with here.

 


Saltire - Diagonal, equal-limbed cross.
Sally-port - Small heavily fortified side door from which the defenders can rush out, strike, and retire.

The roof was poor and thatched; but in strange contrast to it there ran all along under the eaves a line of wooden shields, most gorgeously painted with chevron, bend, and saltire, and every heraldic device.
