Scarp: The side of the ditch next to the parapet; also known as the escarp.
Scarped round bastion: A sloping rounded bastion provided with embrasures, dating from the 15th century.

- the exterior wall of a ditch, ie the side nearest the attackers.

Courtyard - walled enclosure in a castle.

Carlo Scarpa's Brion-Vega Cemetery (1970-72) exemplifies this. The human requirements of a cemetery is that it possesses a solemn nature, yet it must not cause the visitor to become depressed.
