segmental arch - a section of arch that equals the arc of a circle less than a half circle (p.22-all window arches, p.24-all upper floor window arches, p.28-first floor porch arches).

 


SEGMENTAL ARCH A slightly rounded arch over a window or door.
SEMI-ELLIPTICAL ARCH A elongated round arch over a window or door.
SILL The flat horizontal bottom piece of a window or door, often of wood, but sometimes of stone.

segmental arch An arch whose profile comprises an arc smaller than a semicircle.
seraph A celestial being having three pairs of wings. In ecclesiastical art, usually depicted as a child's head with wings.

Seraph. Angel belonging to the highest order in the celestial heirarchy, the seraphim. Often depicted surrounding the figure of God in adoration.

SEGMENTAL ARCH Composed of a single segment, which is less than a semi-circle.
SHAFT The main vertical part of a column between the base and the capital.
SILL The horizontal ledge at the bottom of a window frame.

The fanlight is a segmental arch: not found in Greek architecture. To be Classical Revival, a portico would be needed and the fanlight would have to go.

The Zhaozhou Bridge, built from 595-605 during the Sui Dynasty. It is the oldest fully-stone open-spandrel segmental arch bridge in the world.

Wyatt windowTerm for the type of large tripartite sash window with narrower side lights and a segmental arch above, made popular by the Wyatt family of architects in the late 18th century.

His even more astonishing Cappella della Santa Sindone (Chapel of the Holy Shroud, 1667-1694), also in Turin, has a cone-shaped hexagonal dome created by six segmental arches rising in eight staggered tiers.

SEGMENTAL ARCH: an arch formed of a segment of a circle the centre of which is below the springing line. SEGMENTAL-POINTED ARCH: an arch formed of two segments of a circle, both with centres below the springing line.
