Solar gain
The process of providing a net heat gain within a structure, over and above the normal heat loss, by passive collection of the sun's heat through windows and other glazed areas.

Solar - Upper living room , often over the great hall; the lord's private living room.
Spandrel - Area between top of a column or pier and the apex of the arch springing from it.
Splay - Chamfer, or sloping face.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient Indicates the percentage of normal incident solar heat energy that makes its way through the glazing under standard summer conditions.

solarium A glass-enclosed porch or room, often used to display flowers and other plants; also called a sunroom or garden room.

By 1950, architects were looking into solar heating and power- saving alternatives. As a result, many Mid-century Modern style homes have floor to ceiling windows on the south side of the house.

Shading coefficient: Decimal value which is the solar gain of a window, divided by the solar gain for a clear single-glass window of the same size. The shading coefficient of clear, double-glazing is about 0.85 to 0.9.

This Third Ward Bungalow, on the other hand, used the original roof line to add a passive solar room partially below the ground (facing south), thus maintaining its original style.
Offices also used Shed designs, as this one in Oakwood's.
