brick work - "Stretchers" are full-sized bricks, "headers" are half-sized bricks, and a "course" is a single horizontal line of bricks.

ENGLISH BOND: a method of bonding bricks in which courses of headers and stretchers are laid alternately. ENTABLATURE: the combined assembly of horizontal members supported by a row of columns in classical architecture.

The principal types of "bond" used in domestic construction being English, Flemish, header, stretcher, rat-trap, diagonal or garden wall bond.
