Opus tassellatum. Type of floor made entirely from small square-shaped pieces of marble and stone, usually of different colours.

 


AEGIS (Gr. Aigis), in Homer, the shield or buckler of Zeus, fashioned for him by Hephaestus, furnished with tassels and bearing the Gorgon's head in the centre.

A piece of timber projecting in the same way was called a "tassel" or a "bragger". The technique of corbelling, where rows of corbels support a projecting wall or parapet, has been used since Neolithic times.

The arches of the facade are decorated with spiky projecting tassels whilst the jambs of the arches are made up of engaged columns similar to those used to support the arcades.
