Tower house: (1) The residential defensible tower of the 14th to the 16th century. See z-plan tower house. (2) A fortification which was developed in the Scottish/English border region, which consisted of a simple, strong rectangular tower.

E-plan tower house - tower house with a main block and at least two wings at right angles, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

One of the most characteristic building forms is that of the tower houses which in San'a and the highlands are built of stone and brick but in the Wadi Hadramat are extravagantly tall mud-brick structures.

Tower house(Scots and Irish): Compact fortified house with the main hall raised above the ground and at least one more storey above it.

Owing nothing to the tower house these began to appear from the early 1700's, and typically, are two main storeys, plain and rectangular, three bays wide, and symetrical around a centre door. Quickly became favoured design for manses farm houses etc.
