Transitional - The period around the 1890s between Victorian and Edwardian architecture and incorporating elements from each period.

TRANSITIONAL: the period of change from one architectural style to another, but as used with a capital "T", especially the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic, c. 1200. TREFOIL: divided into three foils.

The buildings of this time are transitional - many still have the thick piers and rounded window openings of the earlier Romanesque style. Vaulting and decoration are simple; there is little sign of the elaborate stonework to come.

Some of the most beautiful work in glass, such for example as that at Auch, is so plainly intermediate between two styles that it is impossible to describe it as anything but "transitional.

The stick style was a transitional style that followed Gothic Revival architecture and preceded Queen Anne architecture which was a more widespread and popular style.
