TRANSVERSE RIB (Fr. arc doubleau), the term in architecture given to the rib of a vault which is carried across the nave, dividing the same into bays.

A transverse rib spans between two walls to divide a vault into bays. In a quadripartite rib-vault, each bay has two pairs of diagonal ribs dividing the vault into four triangular cells.

Sexpartite vault - in architecture, is a name given to the single bay of a vault, which, in addition to the transverse and diagonal ribs, has been divided by a second transverse rib, forming six compartments.
The arch usually protrudes a little from the surface of the vault. If the projecting bands are narrow then it is called a transverse rib; these ribs are usually structural, but sometimes purely decorative.
